Power Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training.... Day 1 Journal Entry:

I wrote this journal entry at the end of DAY 1 of my Power Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training with Tamal Dodge….

"I went into yoga teacher training like I do most new and unknown adventures: a little nervous and anxious.  I was out of my element, away from home, and safety bubble.  I have to admit, I was most anxious and sad to say good-bye to Jared.  Goodbyes seem to remind us of the dreadful deployment days.  I knew that this was only for a short time and I found comfort knowing that I’d be able to go home on the weekends.  Totally do-able.  I was excited for the new adventure.  In my heart I knew I would have a great experience and knew that this is exactly what I needed.  I spent all of Sunday prepping food the week.

Monday, April 8, 2013:  3am start.  Oh, so early!!!

Day 1 was better than I imagined. We started the morning promptly at 7:30am. Tamal’s opening words were about his life growing up on an ashram in Hawaii.  He talked about his father’s journey to Yoga as well as his own journey to Yoga. Their stories are inspiring.  Before Tamal became a yoga teacher, he was touring musician.  Spoiler alert… Tamal is a talented musician and an even better Yogi!

After our opening meet and greet circle, we jumped right into an intense 2-hour power vinyasa yoga class.  Maybe it was just me, but, I think we were all a little unsure what to expect.  I wondered, “Would he look for perfection? Am I doing ok?  Am I even doing this right?”   My mental chatter was quickly hushed as I just felt the calmness and directness in his instruction.  I noticed how his voice matched the intensity of the class and guided me through each step.  It was the perfect blend of challenge and just letting me be me.

I had never done a 2-hour class before, but before I knew it, I was in savasana. This amazingly beautiful music began to play- was it coming from the speakers?  I assumed it was just the play list.  No wait… It’s wasn't!  It took me a few seconds to realize that it was Tamal singing and playing a little guitar. (guitalele)   It was so beautiful and at that moment, my heart filled with gratitude for my life and the opportunity I had to be there.  I was filled with gratitude for the people who support my dreams- Jared, my parents, and my family.  I felt so blessed and fortunate.  Tears started rolling down my cheeks.  It was an amazing experience.  Oh, and I love that he combines his passion for music and yoga to make his class his own.

Early wake up call at 3am, a 2 hour drive, then 2 hours of rigorous yoga class, followed by hours and hours of lecture, and finally topped off with another 1 hour and 15 minute hot power class.  Yep…we are at 19 hours later… this gal feels great and tired at the same time.  Good night!"

To Honor with Sweat, Effort, and Pain

Hey World!

I am back from an AMAZING 3 week intensive Power Yoga Vinyasa Teacher Training.  (more on that in another post).

For today, we wanted to recognize and pay tribute Justin Shmalstieg, his family, and to all who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

For those of you not familiar with CrossFit's Hero WODs (work out of the day),  let me briefly explain.  Hero WODs are workouts published on CrossFit's main site that pay tribute to a service man or woman who has passed away in the line of duty.  These work outs are designed specifically with the person in mind, usually with movements or exercises the individual excelled at or enjoyed.  Family, friends, as well as the CrossFit community can perform these workouts in their honor and memory.  These workouts are generally harder than the normal CrossFit workouts by design.  They really force you draw strength in just knowing that you can sacrifice a little sweat, effort, and pain to honor thier sacrifice.

"Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
~John 15:13

Weekend Workout in the Woods

Here's a video of our "Weekend Workout in the Woods."  It started out as a fun trail run ...  but then things got REAL.  At one point, I caught up to Jared and found him back squatting and pressing a large log over his head.  Of course, not to be out done, I wanted to see if I could lift it as well.  I power cleaned that log right into my chin!  A few back squats and over head squats later, we were back on the trail and off we went!  We cashed out our trail run with a what seemed to be the worst work out ever... at the time, at least.
 Jared did:
3 Rounds of:
20 Tree Wall Balls
10 Log Cleans and Flips

Celest did:
3 Rounds Of:
20 Stone Thrusters
10 Log Cleans and Flips

It was a great work out!  Here's to KEEPING IT REAL:

We were all meant to shine...

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Saturday 1/19/13....
We took it to the great outdoors for a nice trail run at Smith Lake:

Sunday 1/20/13...
Back at SWAGG:

They say misery loves company, so once again we teamed up with our favorite work out friends to form a super team of 4 people.

A.  The gals worked up to a 1 Rep Mak Thruster while the guys worked up to a 1 Rep Max Clean.
B.  Chipper WOD: "Man, that sucked!" Here's how it earned the name...

We each picked out 2 movements and put them all together in list form.  The work out was to be performed by all 4 members going down the list from movement to movement .  Each person had to complete all reps of one movement before moving on to the next.  Then the next person could follow the same pattern, but could not advance to the next movement until the person before them finished.

Jared had the wonderful idea of once we got to the bottom of the list then we had to turn around and go right back up to the top.

This is what it looks like on paper....

20 Slam Balls (30/20)
20 Over Head Squats (95/65)
20 GHD Sit ups
20 DB Shoulder to Over Head (40/25)
75 Double Unders
20 Pull Ups
20 Squat Cleans (95/65)
200m Sled Pull (90/45)
*then repeat back thru to the top

This is what it looks like in real life...
